GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES

Good Agricultural Practices are practices that address environmental, economic and social sustainability for on-farm processes. In fact these practices are agriculturally, socially sustainable, economically viable and environmental friendly. It is a collection of principles and specific methods to apply for agriculture and production processes, resulting in safe, healthy and quality food and non-food agricultural products. In general, a practice can be considered "good" will depend on the standards applied. A multiplicity of Good Agricultural Practices codes, standards and regulations have been developed in recent years by the food industry and producers organizations but also governments and NGOs, aiming to codify agricultural practices at farm level for a range of commodities. However the concept of GAP`s change all the time because of a rapidly changing agriculture, globalization of world trade, food crisis, nitrate pollution of water, appearance of pesticide resistance, soil erosion etc.

The objectives of GAP codes standards and regulations include to a varying degree ensuring safety and quality of produce in the food chain, capturing new market advantages by modifying supply chain governance, improving natural resources use, workers health and working conditions, and or creating new market opportunities for farmers and exporters in developing countries. The concept of Good Agricultural Practices may serve as a reference tool for deciding, at each step in the production process, on practices and or outcomes that are environmentally sustainable and socially acceptable. The implementation of GAP should therefore contribute to Sustainable Agriculture.

Appropriate adoption and monitoring of GAP helps improve the safety and quality of food and other agricultural products. It can also help to reduce the risk of non-compliance with national and international regulations, standards and guidelines, World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) and the International Plant Protection Convention IPPC regarding permitted pesticides, maximum levels of contaminants in food and non-food agricultural products, as well as other chemical, microbiological and physical contamination hazards. Adoption of GAP helps promotes sustainable agriculture and contributes to meeting national and international environment and social development objectives.

Today, Pontian United Plantation Berhad is heading its direction in term of GAP towards Environmental Sustainability. We try to have the best practices to minimize impacts and maintain production of oil palm plantation. We are aware on sustainability practices, sustainable and good agriculture practices that care for the environment and wildlife habitat and we believe that these principles will provide a healthy balance between the economies.

In the future Pontian is striving to have more credibility in the eyes of our partners and customer where they have so many standard and labels. Concerns about the adverse environmental impacts, climate change and destruction of flora and fauna from oil palm cultivation are among the issues which the palm oil industry must continue to address. The Malaysian palm oil industry which Pontian as one of the player has contributed significantly in improving the economy of the nation, to reduce poverty and also provided employment for the locals to  reduce the migration of the rural population to the urban areas. So people need palm oil. However, oil palm producers need biodiversity. Therefore, there is a conflict between oil palm expansion and biodiversity conservation. At Pontian all measures are being taken to resolve this conflict and will continue its approaches to further find solutions to these issues,

That is why at Pontian we are concern and  will take all initiatives to ensure our agriculture practices are in compliances with the need to be agriculturally practical, socially sustainable, economically viable and environmentally friendly to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil through cooperation within the supply chain and open dialogue between its stakeholders.

Today, it is not a suggestion but an obligation to take care of our environment.
